Parabolic velocity profile causes shape-selective drift of inertial ellipsoids

Motion of elongated particles in shear is studied. In applications where are much heavier than the carrying fluid, e.g. aerosols, influence particle inertia dominates dynamics. Assuming that only experiences a local linear velocity profile, its rotational and translational motion independent. However, we show quadratic terms profile combined with cause lateral drift prolate spheroidal particles. We find this maximal when inertial forces same order magnitude as viscous forces, both extremely light heavy have negligible drift. non-inertial case, rotates according to each instantaneous orientation corresponding gives zero force on particle. This results flow direction periodic fluctuations. With added inertia, slow react surrounding fluid will switch between slower faster rotation compared zero-force solution. The final integrated over period, purely an effect non-sphericity while negligible. Finally, although contribute channel flow, sedimentation due gravity dominate any practical application earth.
